What-Is-CoolSculpting

What is CoolSculpting?

You’ve been eating well, exercising regularly, and doing everything right. But certain areas of fat simply refuse to budge. The lower belly. The flanks. That stubborn pocket under the chin that no amount of cardio seems to touch.

You’re not imagining it. Some fat deposits are genetically resistant to diet and exercise. They were there before you started your fitness routine, and they’ll likely still be there if you keep doing the same thing. CoolSculpting was designed specifically for this problem.

This guide explains how the treatment works, what it costs, who it suits, and what results you can genuinely expect, based on our experience delivering CoolSculpting Elite at Cavendish Clinic in Fitzrovia since the technology’s UK launch.

What Is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is an FDA-cleared, non-surgical body contouring treatment that permanently destroys fat cells using controlled cooling. The scientific term is cryolipolysis, and the principle behind it is elegant: fat cells freeze at a higher temperature than the surrounding skin, muscle, and nerve tissue. By cooling a targeted area to precisely the right temperature, the treatment triggers fat cell death without damaging anything else.

Those frozen fat cells crystallise, their membranes rupture, and over the following weeks your body’s lymphatic system naturally processes and eliminates them. They don’t regenerate. Adults cannot create new fat cells to replace the ones removed. The fat reduction is permanent, provided you maintain a stable weight.

CoolSculpting Elite is the latest generation of the technology, featuring redesigned C-shaped applicators that conform more closely to the body’s contours, improved cooling efficiency, and the ability to treat two areas simultaneously. That last point is significant: dual applicators mean treatment sessions that once took two hours can now be completed in roughly half the time.

How Does CoolSculpting Work?

The treatment relies on a biological fact that researchers at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital first observed: fat cells are more vulnerable to cold than other tissue types.

Here’s what happens during a CoolSculpting cycle. A gel pad is placed on the treatment area to protect the skin. The applicator is then positioned and draws the tissue between its cooling panels using gentle vacuum suction. The area is cooled to a precise temperature, typically between -11°C and +5°C depending on the applicator and treatment area, for 40 to 60 minutes per area.

During this time, the targeted fat cells undergo apoptosis, a controlled form of cell death. The cell membranes crystallise and rupture. Over the following four to twelve weeks, your immune system’s macrophages gradually collect and process the damaged cells. They’re filtered through the lymphatic system and metabolised by the liver, just like any other cellular waste.

The result? A measurable reduction of up to 20 to 25 percent of the fat layer in the treated area per cycle. Not weight loss, but genuine fat layer reduction that changes the contour and shape of the treated zone.

How Much Does CoolSculpting Cost?

CoolSculpting is priced per cycle (one applicator placement on one area), and the total cost depends on how many areas you want to treat and how many cycles each area requires.

Across the UK, prices typically range from £260 to £395 per cycle. In Central London, expect to pay towards the upper end of that range, reflecting the calibre of practitioners, the quality of the clinic environment, and the use of genuine CoolSculpting Elite equipment rather than off-brand alternatives.

At Cavendish Clinic, CoolSculpting Elite cycles start from £395. Most patients treat two to four areas, so a typical treatment plan falls between £790 and £1200. We structure our pricing as packages, with per-cycle costs reducing as you add more cycles. Our four-cycle package, for instance, offers a meaningful saving compared to booking individual sessions.

A few things worth understanding about pricing. Clinics offering dramatically lower prices may be using older-generation equipment, non-genuine applicators, or less experienced practitioners. CoolSculpting is a medical device treatment that requires proper training and clinical oversight. The difference between a well-executed treatment and a poorly delivered one isn’t just comfort; it’s your results.

We always recommend starting with a consultation. Your practitioner will assess your areas of concern, recommend how many cycles you’ll need, and give you a clear, transparent price before you commit.

Areas That Can Be Treated with CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting Elite is cleared for nine treatment areas, making it one of the most versatile non-surgical body contouring options available.

Abdomen is the most commonly requested area. Whether it’s a post-pregnancy pouch or a stubborn lower belly that won’t flatten despite regular exercise, the abdomen responds particularly well to CoolSculpting. Depending on the amount of pinchable fat, one to four cycles per session may be recommended.

Flanks (love handles) are the fat deposits that sit above the hips. These are notoriously resistant to exercise, especially in men. CoolSculpting can create a visibly smoother waistline, and the flanks are one of the areas where patients tend to see the most satisfying results.

Inner and outer thighs can both be treated. The inner thigh applicator addresses the soft tissue that can cause discomfort or self-consciousness, while the outer thigh treatment targets “saddlebag” deposits that alter the leg’s silhouette.

Upper arms are a popular treatment area, particularly for patients who feel self-conscious about arm fat that persists despite strength training. Results here can be subtle but meaningful.

Chin and jawline (submental area) is one of the more recent additions to the CoolSculpting portfolio. A smaller applicator targets the fat beneath the chin, improving profile definition without the need for injectable fat dissolvers or surgical intervention.

Back and bra area fat can be particularly frustrating because it’s visible under clothing. CoolSculpting applicators designed for flatter, broader areas work well here.

Under the buttocks (banana roll) addresses the crescent-shaped fat deposit that can blur the line between the buttock and upper thigh. Treating this area creates a more lifted, defined look.

Benefits of CoolSculpting

The appeal of CoolSculpting comes down to four points that genuinely set it apart from other fat reduction approaches.

No surgery, no needles, no anaesthesia. The treatment is entirely external. There are no incisions, no stitches, and no need for sedation. You remain fully awake and comfortable throughout.

No downtime. Most patients return to their normal routine immediately after treatment. You can have a session during a long lunch break and go straight back to work. There is no compression garment requirement, no restricted activity period, and no recovery leave needed.

Permanent fat cell elimination. The fat cells destroyed by CoolSculpting are gone for good. Your body does not replace them. As long as you maintain a stable weight, the treated area will remain slimmer than before.

Gradual, natural-looking results. Because the body eliminates the treated fat cells over weeks rather than all at once, the change is progressive. Colleagues and friends notice you look slimmer but can’t quite pinpoint what changed. There’s no sudden, obvious “I had something done” moment.

Beyond these headline benefits, CoolSculpting Elite’s dual-applicator design means faster treatment sessions and the ability to treat symmetrical areas (both flanks, both thighs) in a single sitting. Comfort has also improved with the latest C-shaped applicator design, which conforms better to body contours and reduces the pulling sensation.

CoolSculpting vs Liposuction

Both treatments reduce fat, but they’re designed for different situations and different patients.

CoolSculpting is non-surgical, requires no anaesthesia, involves zero downtime, and produces gradual results over two to four months. It reduces the fat layer by 20 to 25 percent per cycle and is best suited to patients who are close to their target weight but have specific pockets of stubborn fat they want to address.

Liposuction is a surgical procedure performed under general or local anaesthesia. It physically suctions fat from the body through small incisions using a cannula. It can remove a significantly larger volume of fat in a single session, but it requires days to weeks of recovery, carries surgical risks (infection, bleeding, scarring, anaesthesia complications), and typically involves wearing compression garments for several weeks.

The question isn’t which is “better.” It’s which is right for your situation. If you’re looking to remove a large volume of fat or reshape a broad area significantly, liposuction may be more appropriate. If you want to refine specific areas without surgery, downtime, or the risks that come with an operating theatre, CoolSculpting is the stronger choice.

At Cavendish Clinic, our Medical Director Mr Matthew James is a Consultant Plastic Surgeon who performs both surgical and non-surgical body contouring. That means our recommendations are genuinely impartial. If CoolSculpting isn’t the right fit for your goals, we’ll tell you, and we can offer surgical alternatives under the same clinical roof.

Who Is an Ideal Candidate for CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting works best for patients who meet a specific profile, and being upfront about this matters.

Good candidates are at or near a healthy body weight (generally within a stone or so of their target), have visible, pinchable fat deposits in one or more of the treatable areas, and want to reduce those deposits without surgery. They have realistic expectations: CoolSculpting is a contouring treatment, not a weight loss solution.

The pinch test is a simple guide. If you can pinch a visible roll of fat in the area you’re concerned about, CoolSculpting can likely help. If the area feels firm rather than soft, it may be visceral fat (deeper, around the organs) rather than subcutaneous fat, and CoolSculpting won’t be effective.

CoolSculpting may not be suitable if you have cryoglobulinaemia, cold agglutinin disease, or paroxysmal cold haemoglobinuria, as these conditions affect how your body responds to cold exposure. Pregnant or breastfeeding patients should also wait.

The best way to determine suitability is a face-to-face consultation. Your practitioner will physically assess the treatment area, discuss your body contouring goals, and recommend the most effective plan. Sometimes that’s CoolSculpting alone; sometimes it’s CoolSculpting combined with EmSculpt Neo for simultaneous muscle building; and occasionally, it’s an honest conversation about whether surgical options would better serve your goals.

What Happens During the Procedure?

Knowing exactly what to expect removes the anxiety.

Before your session, your practitioner will review your treatment plan and mark the areas to be treated. You’ll change into comfortable clothing or a gown, and settle into a treatment chair or bed.

A gel pad is applied to the skin. This protects the skin’s surface from the cold and ensures even contact between the applicator and the treatment area.

The applicator is positioned and the gentle vacuum suction draws the tissue between the cooling panels. You’ll feel a firm pulling and pressure sensation for the first few minutes, followed by intense cold. Within five to ten minutes, the area numbs and most patients feel little beyond mild pressure for the remainder of the cycle.

During the 35 to 75 minute cycle, you’re free to read, scroll your phone, work on a laptop, or simply relax. Many of our patients at Cavendish Clinic use the time to catch up on emails or read. With CoolSculpting Elite’s dual applicators, two areas can be treated simultaneously, cutting overall session time significantly.

When the applicator is removed, the treated area will appear red and feel firm, almost frozen. Your practitioner will perform a brief massage on the area to break up the crystallised fat cells and improve results. This two-minute massage can feel uncomfortable but is an important part of the protocol.

You’ll be on your way within minutes of the cycle completing. No bandages, no compression garments, no special instructions beyond avoiding anti-inflammatory medications for the first few days (they can interfere with the inflammatory response that processes the damaged fat cells).

CoolSculpting Recovery and Aftercare

One of CoolSculpting’s defining advantages is the absence of any meaningful recovery period.

Immediately after treatment, the treated area may be red, swollen, tender, or numb. Some patients experience a tingling or stinging sensation as the area warms back to normal temperature. These effects typically resolve within hours to days.

In the first week, you may notice some bruising, tenderness, or a sensation of fullness in the treated area. These are normal and indicate your body’s inflammatory response is processing the damaged fat cells.

Returning to exercise is fine from the same day for most patients, though the treated area may feel sensitive during vigorous movement for the first few days.

Aftercare recommendations are minimal. Stay well hydrated, as this supports your lymphatic system in processing the eliminated fat cells. Continue eating a balanced diet and maintaining your exercise routine. Avoid anti-inflammatory medications (ibuprofen, aspirin) for the first week if possible, as the inflammatory response is part of how the treatment works.

Follow-up appointments at Cavendish Clinic are scheduled at six to eight weeks and again at twelve weeks to assess your progress and determine whether additional cycles would benefit you.

How Long Do CoolSculpting Results Last?

The fat cells eliminated by CoolSculpting are permanently destroyed. Your body cannot regenerate them. In that sense, CoolSculpting results are permanent.

The caveat is straightforward: if you gain significant weight after treatment, your remaining fat cells (both in the treated area and elsewhere) can expand. This won’t undo the treatment, but it can diminish the visual effect. A patient who gains two stone after CoolSculpting will still have fewer fat cells in the treated area than they did before, but those remaining cells will have grown.

Maintaining a stable, healthy weight is the single most important factor in preserving your results long term.

The results timeline follows a predictable pattern. Initial changes become visible around weeks two to four. The most noticeable improvements appear between months two and three. The body continues processing treated fat cells for up to six months, so patience is part of the process. Many patients find they appreciate their results more as months pass and the contour continues to refine.

CoolSculpting Before and After Results

Clinical studies consistently demonstrate a 20 to 25 percent reduction in the fat layer per treatment cycle. For most patients, that translates into a visible, measurable change in body contour that’s noticeable in photographs and in how clothing fits.

Results vary between individuals based on the thickness of the fat layer, the number of cycles completed, and individual metabolic factors. Some patients achieve their desired outcome after a single session; others benefit from two or more sessions spaced eight to twelve weeks apart.

At Cavendish Clinic, we document your progress with standardised photographs taken before treatment and at your follow-up appointments. This allows you to see the change objectively, since gradual results can sometimes be difficult to appreciate in the mirror day to day.

We encourage prospective patients to view before and after images during their consultation, where we can show results from patients with similar body types and treatment areas to yours. Individual results may vary, and your practitioner will give you an honest assessment of what CoolSculpting can achieve for your specific anatomy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The fat cells destroyed during CoolSculpting are permanently eliminated from the body. Adults cannot generate new fat cells to replace them. The treated area will have fewer fat cells than before, and that reduction is lasting. The important caveat is that remaining fat cells can still expand if you gain weight, so maintaining a healthy, stable weight is key to preserving your results long term.

This depends on the area being treated and the volume of fat present. Many patients see satisfying results after a single session per area, while others benefit from two or more sessions spaced eight to twelve weeks apart. Your practitioner will assess your fat layer thickness during your consultation and recommend the number of cycles needed. As a rough guide, smaller areas like the chin may need one to two cycles, while larger areas like the abdomen may require two to four.

Results develop gradually as your body processes the treated fat cells. Most patients notice initial changes around the two to four week mark, with the most visible improvements appearing at two to three months. Your body continues eliminating treated fat cells for up to six months, so results continue to refine over that period. We schedule follow-up assessments at six to eight weeks and twelve weeks to track your progress.

CoolSculpting Elite is cleared for nine treatment areas: abdomen, flanks (love handles), inner thighs, outer thighs, upper arms, chin and jawline (submental area), back and bra area, under the buttocks (banana roll), and the knee area. Your practitioner will determine which areas are suitable based on the type and distribution of fat during your consultation.
